Shining Rock Wilderness

A few months ago we hiked the beautiful Shining Rock Wilderness, located on the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. We went from Black Balsam to the top of Cold Mountain, enjoying the amazing views the whole way. Carrie is a huge fan of the novel Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, so she was thrilled to hike this influential mountain. I strapped my GoPro camera to my chest and took several thousand photographs along the way, this is the end product.

Goofing Off in Honolulu

Just a silly video of some friends and I goofing off in a swimming pool in Honolulu. Be warned, you might get motion sickness…

Bridge Jumping in Ofu

Here is a little video of us jumping off the bridge between the islands of Ofu and Olosega, which is in the Manu’a Island chain in American Samoa. You really couldn’t ask for a more scenic place.

Asheville to Cold Mountain

Here is a time-lapse video I made with my new GoPro camera. This is the drive from my house to the Cold Mountain parking area on the Blue Ridge Parkway in about 3,000 photos.

Texas Fires

I just returned home from a 2 week fire assignment in West Texas and thought I’d share a few photos. You can find more of my Texas Fire photos here.

Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch during the Rockhouse Fire

We spent 14 days working on the Rock House Fire, which is near the small town of Fort Davis, Texas. Fort Davis has a population of around 1,000, which has probably doubled in size due to all of the fire personnel in town. The fire was burning actively and continued to grow each of the 14 days we were there. In fact, it sounds as if it is still growing as of today. The fire is burning in some very difficult canyon country with record breaking weather conditions, which made it very difficult for crews to get a handle on it. We were experiencing 4% Relative Humidity and 60 MPH winds! Hopefully things start to improve there so the nice people of Fort Davis can have their quiet lives back.

Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch during the Rockhouse Fire

I was very surprised by how incredible this little pocket of West Texas was: beautiful canyons, desolate landscape, rugged terrain, abundant wildlife and amazing stars at night. I did have the opportunity to see Fort Davis National Historic Site which is right in town, Its a pretty cool place with some interesting history. Next time I’m in the area Big Bend National Park will be on my list for sure. I really hope I can make it back to this area one day to explore some more, hopefully next time will be without all the fires.
